Salmon & Trout Fishing

Fish the Waters That Inspired A Legend

Mountain Waters offers excellent Salmon and Trout fishing on the majestic Portland Creek River.  The river connects the Atlantic Ocean on the Western side of Newfoundland with beautiful Portland Creek Pond.  Our property is 170 acres in size and connects on both sides of Portland Creek River from the Pond to the Ocean.

World Class Fishing

Portland Creek is known for amazing fishing, beautiful scenery, and of course Mr. Lee Wulff. Our Mountain Waters experience allows you to fish the same pools that Lee Wulff did so many years ago and also explore the tributaries and beautiful Portland Creek Inner Pond.

We also off excursions to other areas in Western Newfoundland but have found that the majority of our clients love to fish Portland Creek.  As one client put it, “it is the best kept secret I have found.”

A guided fishing trip at Mountain Waters Resort includes pick-up and drop-off at Deer Lake Airport or a local hotel, depending on your flight schedule. Your stay includes all accommodations and meals at the lodge, as well as salmon and trout fishing licenses. Most guests arrive late Sunday morning or around noon and depart the following Saturday evening or Sunday morning, depending on flight times and safety considerations. You’ll enjoy six full days of guided fishing from Monday to Saturday, with the option to fish on arrival Sunday for an added fee. Experienced guides will take you to the best fishing locations, including the Portland Creek River, Brians Feeder, Inner Pond, Torrent River, River of Ponds, and other productive salmon and trout waters.

Meet Our Fishing Guide

Rod Brophy is a lifelong outdoorsman with over 50 years of experience in salmon fishing and guiding on the legendary Portland Creek River. Mentored by his father and local legends like Riley House, Rod began tying his own flies at 14 and guiding guests by 18. His deep knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador’s rivers—and his passion for teaching the art of fly fishing—make him a valued guide and storyteller on the water.

Rod is dedicated to promoting a sustainable recreational salmon fishery, ensuring future generations, including his own grandchildren, can enjoy the thrill and beauty of Atlantic salmon fishing.

Where Legendary Waters Meet Unmatched Guiding

Fishing Portland Creek at the Mountain Waters Resort is one of the best Atlantic salmon angling experiences on the island of Newfoundland. You’ll understand immediately what convinced Lee Wulff to build his original lodge in this spectacular location. The river boasts a healthy, consistent run of both grilse and large salmon – the latter more common than in most of the rivers in the region. The pools fish well in nearly all water conditions and through almost the entire season, with both wet and dry flies.

You can walk from your cabin and be on the river in a matter of minutes, wading, or if you prefer fishing from a boat.  Throughout the summer fresh silver fish continue to arrive from the nearby saltwater. There are also backcountry options all the way to the base of the Long Range Mountains. Head guide Rod Brophy has been fishing Portland Creek for his entire life, and knows every riffle and rock. His low key, patient approach will appeal to experienced and novice salmon anglers alike.

As a bonus, Mountain Waters is located not far from the northern entrance to Gros Morne National Park. Some of its most famous attractions, including the Western Brook Pond boat tour and Shallow Bay beach are a short drive away. Those wanting to venture a little farther afield can head north to the L’Anse Aux Meadows viking site and the whales and icebergs off St. Anthony.
