The Legacy of

Lee Wulff in Newfoundland

Few names are as deeply tied to the history of Atlantic salmon fishing as Lee Wulff—a pioneering outdoorsman, conservationist, author, and filmmaker. While he made his mark around the world, it was in Newfoundland’s remote and rugged rivers that Wulff built one of his most enduring legacies.

Mountain Waters Resort is built on these legacies.

A Visionary in the Wilderness

In the mid-1940s, Wulff set his sights on the pristine waters of Portland Creek, on Newfoundland’s west coast. Captivated by the abundance of wild Atlantic salmon and the untouched beauty of the region, he established a rustic fishing camp he called “Runnin’ Out”. What began as a personal outpost soon became a destination for international anglers, drawn by Wulff’s reputation and the thrill of casting into wild, productive rivers.

To make this remote area more accessible, Wulff constructed a private airstrip, capable of receiving even large aircraft like the DC-3. With the help of bush planes and a deep respect for the environment, he brought attention to Newfoundland’s incredible salmon fishery, all while pioneering a model of sustainable, fly-only angling that was ahead of its time.

Conservation Before Its Time

Lee Wulff was more than just a master angler—he was a passionate conservationist. He famously coined the phrase, “A game fish is too valuable to be caught only once.” His work in Newfoundland was an early example of catch-and-release advocacy, and he stressed the importance of preserving wild stocks long before it became common practice.

Through writings, films, and firsthand experience, Wulff inspired a generation of anglers to treat fish and habitat with respect. His efforts in Newfoundland helped shape the broader conversation around ecological stewardship and sustainable tourism—principles that still guide operations in the region today.

Lasting Connection

Though Wulff’s personal time in Newfoundland spanned several decades, the impact of his work endures. His original camp at Portland Creek laid the foundation for what is now Mountain Waters Resort, where the original fireplace from his lodge still stands as a tribute to his time on the land.

Today, visitors to the area can walk the same paths, cast into the same waters, and feel the same awe that Wulff once did. His legacy lives on in every fly cast, every salmon released, and every story shared by the riverside.
